Twinkie

Introducing Twinkie, a 2-year-old Boxer/Staffordshire Terrier mix (our best guess)!

Twinkie is built like a fire hydrant at about 50 lbs – at least 80% of that is in her head/neck – but is convinced she is a lap dog. Her foster parents report that every chair is a loveseat with Twinkie around, and she makes a perfect “little spoon.” Twinkie has a high prey drive which means playing fetch or chase is a blast with her, but she should not go to a home with cats or other small critters. Squeaky toys and chewy bones are some of her favorite things (she has been known to put on a performance of taking every single toy out of a toy basket), along with belly rubs and long walks.

Twinkie is perfectly house trained (0 accidents and does her business on a predictable schedule outside), crate trained, knows her basic training cues and is a great loose leash walker so long as no squirrels or outdoor cats are around! She’s currently living in a city and does just fine with the sounds and traffic, especially since she has learned to “check in” with her handler – meaning she gets a treat when she looks up at whoever is walking her for reassurance.

Twinkie can be nervous when meeting new people–she gives off some puffy little barks and scurries away for the first few moments, but warms up quickly especially with patience and tasty treats being tossed her way. And once she knows you, Twinkie is a loving, playful, silly comedian, who will always greet you with butt wiggles and bunny hops that show just how excited she is to see you.

Because of her needing patient introductions, a home with older kids (16+) and not a lot of commotion would be best for Twinkie. Twinkie has lived with two other dogs her size (both of them confident and very dog-friendly) and did great with them, but is now in foster where she is the only dog and she is thriving there, too. Another confident, chill dog could be a match for Twinkie, but she’d also be perfectly happy having all of the cuddles to herself. While she loves playtime she is also perfectly content to spend an afternoon curled up on the couch snoozing with you.
