Dolly: The Dog Who Made a Hard Season Softer

After having Dolly for a few weeks, we learned Dolly had a serious heart condition that required immediate surgery. Even more heartbreaking, her sister had the exact same issue. The two girls were scheduled for surgery around the same time, and we all held onto hope that they’d both make it through.

Dolly’s Story (And Mine!)

Today’s story is a little different because it’s about me, too — and my experience fostering one very special dog through Wise Animal Rescue, Dolly.

I was hesitant to rescue Dolly because I knew exactly what would happen — I was going to get attached.

At the time, life already felt really overwhelming. My husband and I were preparing to go through IVF, carrying all the emotions and uncertainty that came with it, and I honestly wasn’t sure I had the bandwidth to take on anything else. But then Dolly showed up. And somehow, she became exactly what I needed.

Taking care of her during that season of life felt therapeutic in a way I can’t fully explain. She gave me something happy and healing to focus on and pour love into during a time that already felt really heavy. Tiny but mighty, Dolly had the best personality. She was like this little mayor — everyone loved her, and she somehow made the room feel lighter. What made her even more special was how naturally she fit into our home with our dog, Augie, who famously likes humans more than other dogs. She was gentle, sweet, and we knew pretty quickly that we wanted to adopt her.

Medical Journey

After having her for a few weeks, we learned Dolly had a serious heart condition that required immediate surgery. Even more heartbreaking, her sister had the exact same issue. The two girls were scheduled for surgery around the same time, and we all held onto hope that they’d both make it through. I took Dolly in first, just one week before her sister’s procedure was scheduled. But during surgery, complications arose, and Dolly sadly passed away. I was devastated. Losing her just felt so unfair, as she had become such a bright light.

Recovery & Legacy

In the middle of heartbreak, there was still a small piece of hope. Dolly’s sister, Gracie, went through with her surgery shortly after — and survived. Today, she’s thriving and is now part of our extended family after being adopted by my sister-in-law’s mom where she is being spoiled rotten! In a way, Dolly’s story still lives on through her. And while Dolly was only with us for a very short time, she arrived during one of the hardest chapters of my life and reminded me that love, comfort, and healing can come in the tiniest forms imaginable. And somehow, I still feel connected to her. Today, we have an amazing 11-month-old little boy who is absolutely thriving, and I truly believe she watches over him every single day.

Prognosis

20/10.
Tiny mayor energy. Professional comfort-giver. Expert pinecone collector. Left this world way too soon, but somehow still managed to leave behind a lifetime of love in just a few weeks.

Dogtor’s Note

Dogs are only here briefly. But every once in a while, one enters your life exactly when you need them most — and even though their time is short, their impact lasts forever. Thanks for everything Dolls. We love you!
