A Gentle Note: This story includes themes of illness and loss. Please read with care.
Erwin’s Story At just 1 lb 1 oz, Erwin was the runt of a litter of six—born into a puppy mill in Indiana and already at a disadvantage.
When he was rescued by Wise, it became clear how much he was up against. Erwin had multiple medical challenges, including musculoskeletal and rectal abnormalities, a grade 2 heart murmur, parasites, and signs of malnourishment. He hadn’t been given the nutrients—or the chance—he needed to grow. But still, he fought.
For several days in February, Erwin was in the hospital receiving around-the-clock care. The team did everything they could to stabilize him, nourish him, and give his tiny body a chance to catch up. But some battles are just too big for bodies that small. Despite every effort, Erwin passed away at just 11 weeks old. We may never fully know the extent of what he was facing—but we do know this: in his final days, he was warm, cared for, and deeply loved. And that’s what matters.
This is the unfortunate reality Wise sometimes faces—stepping in when it’s too late to change the outcome, but never too late to provide love and comfort.
Dogtor’s Note: Not every story gets the ending we hope for, but every dog deserves to be loved while they’re here. And Erwin was.
Prognosis: Forever loved. Forever remembered.
Support the Mission: Erwin didn’t get the life he deserved—but he got a chance. Please help us give more dogs like him the care, comfort, and love they need when it matters most. However you show up—donating, volunteering, or sharing our mission—it truly helps.
