Foster FAQs

When You Need To Know

Our rescue is entirely foster-based, meaning all of our pets are placed into loving foster homes while they wait for their forever families. Without our amazing team of fosters, we could not rescue homeless animals in need. Every pet that is fostered, and subsequently adopted, makes room for another animal to be rescued.

As a foster parent, you are required to work on house training, crate training, socialization, and teach basic commands. This is what will help your foster pet get adopted and have a successful future. The foster parent should also keep in constant contact with our team and report the pet’s progress, problems, issues, etc.

If approved, please review our foster contract as it goes into the specifics of the rules of fostering for WISE.

Rescue animals go through a decompression/ adjustment period upon entering a new home. During this time, unknown behaviors and/or medical issues may arise that were previously not seen. Are you prepared to handle any behavioral or medical needs that your foster pet has?

WISE’s fosters must understand and agree to not adopt their foster pets unless it has been explicitly approved by the rescue. Do you understand and accept that you are helping a pet find his or her forever home, even if it is not yours?

Typically, WISE’s fosters hold onto their foster pets until they are adopted. Dogs can be in the rescue for a week or two or months. If you cannot commit to taking in a pet for an extended period of time, the Adoption/Foster Coordinator will work with you to create a plan. Are you prepared for either circumstance?

Fosters are expected to provide exercise, basic obedience training, and house-training. Are you prepared to do so?

Should you have ANY concerns or feel uncomfortable with a situation involving your foster pet contact WISE immediately. We will either take the pet out of your home or have a trainer come and meet with you, depending on the severity of the situation.

If you see any behavior questionable, contact us immediately so we can assess the situation and take action if needed; for example (showing teeth/ lip, growling, staring excessively etc.). We want to make sure our fosters and our pets are set up for a safe, successful experience.

WISE provides our fosters with just about everything they could need from food to crates to access to our veterinary network. WISE appreciates fosters’ willingness to donate to their foster pet’s general expenses, such as food, treats, etc.
